CHAPTER TWELVE

Using my sleeve, I wiped the tears and at least some of the dirt from my cheeks. Time to head back to the house and face the music. With this magic, I couldn't heal myself, and I needed to swallow my pride and ask my mother for her help, in spite of us not being on the best of terms lately. The wrist wasn't broken; I didn't think, but it hurt like the dickens and I had no desire to wait for time to do its job. Something told me there wasn't much time to be had at all before the next trying thing presented itself.

By the time I reached the path leading to the house, I'd begun stumbling with exhaustion. Each step sent pain ricocheting up my arm and into my head. Added to the tears of betrayal from Isaiah's treatment and I had a pounding headache. For a few minutes I stood in the treeline, staring. A few lights were on, but I couldn't see my mother through any of the windows.

Daylight hadn't quite begun to wane yet, but the shadows still seemed to lengthen as I watched. Avoiding looking toward the area where we had laid Aimee to rest, I focused on the house itself. Nothing sinister jumped out at me.

Tears fell again at seeing she was alright. “There is blood all over the porch. I thought something awful had happened to you!”

She shook her head. “I'm fine,” she soothed me with her tone as she had when I was a little girl. “Come, sit.” She tried to grab my wrist, stopping as she saw me wince in pain. “Again, what happened to you? Not all of this-” she waved her hand in my direction, “came from finding some blood on our porch.”

“Today was shit. Isaiah is a ginormous shit. And being clumsy is a pain in the damn ass.” I sniffled.

“Tell me all about it so I can help you fix it.” My mother used her crooning voice, one I hadn't heard since my age was a single digit number, and I used to have nightmares that caused me to wake up screaming in the middle of the night.

“First, why is there blood on the porch? Do you have any idea where it came from?”

“No.” She raised her eyebrows. “Now, are you going to tell me what happened?”

I gave her the abbreviated version, leaving
